4) What are some of the differences between coaching and therapy?
The nature of coaching and therapy are quite different.
Coaching is the study of human potential and possibility to allow more of peoples’ true potential to be released. It deals with a healthy client desiring a better situation and takes the past as context to enable a better future to be created. It helps the client learn new skills and tools that will enable them to move towards their goals.
Therapy traditionally has dealt mostly with a person’s trauma, for someone who is seeking healing to help them resolve old pain, and the relationship was that of doctor/patient. The therapist would provide a diagnosis and then offer professional expertise to aid healing.
Both coaching and therapy deal with the issue that it is often peoples’ limiting beliefs, based on conditioning of the past, that hold them back from achieving their goals. In part, it is the process of releasing old ideas and beliefs and replacing them with new ones that are positive and supportive that can make coaching and therapy so powerful.
